Gabby Scalzo, PhD, LCP

Dr. Gabby Scalzo is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who earned their PhD in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University. They have experience providing psychotherapy in a variety of settings, such as private practice, integrated behavioral health, and university counseling.

Gabby takes an integrated and client-centered approach to therapy, which means they work with each client to figure out what type(s) of therapy will be most helpful for them. Some of their major influences are intersectional feminist therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Gabby also has expertise in treatments such as Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). They are a member of Discovery Counseling’s Intensively Trained DBT team.

Gabby’s goal as a therapist is to help empower their clients to build fulfilling and meaningful lives that are in line with their values; for some clients that might mean getting support in exploring what a meaningful life means to them. Others may already have specific goals in mind and are looking for support in the form of skills and tools to get there. There is no one “right way” to be a healthy, fulfilled person. Gabby is especially passionate about working with polyamorous, queer, and neurodivergent adults, and they strive to provide affirming and culturally humble care to all their clients.

Gabby works with individual and group clients ages 15 and up on a wide variety of concerns, with particular specialty in:

  • Grief and Bereavement
  • Childhood Trauma
  • Culturally-Based Trauma
  • Identity Concerns and Life Transitions
  • Challenges with Emotion Regulation
  • Eating Disorders
  • Personality Disorders
  • Suicidal ideation and non-suicidal self-injury

Gabby currently lives on a small farm in where they spend a disproportionate amount of their free time capturing wayward bugs in paper cups. Their other hobbies include frog watching, horseback riding, and trying to crochet while their cat plays with the yarn.
